Samarqand Region: A Square and a Large Region
Look at the wide open square in the picture. It is Registan Square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Three large buildings stand around the square. Their walls have many blue, turquoise, cream, and brown patterns. Tall towers rise beside the buildings, and a blue-green dome is visible on the right. Trees, pools, and small visitors make the space feel open. This view helps us connect a place with a larger area: Samarqand Region. The region is in Uzbekistan and covers about 16,400 square kilometres. Around 3,444,800 people live there. It began on January 15, 1938. So, the region is much newer than the historic-looking buildings in this photograph. The picture does not show the whole region; it shows one square in Samarkand. The contrast is interesting: an administrative region includes places with strong traditional designs. The image gives us one clear window into the region, while the basic facts show its size and population.Sources & licenses
