Die kinetische Plastik von Arnulf Hoffmann in Köln

Kinetic Sculpture in Cologne

In Cologne, Germany, a public artwork called Kinetic Sculpture rises beside a green city space. Arnulf Hoffmann is the artist. The artwork dates from 1977 and is about 13 metres high. A tall central column forms its main shape. Many thin rods extend from both sides. Round, silver-colored discs are placed between the rods. Some discs face the viewer directly. Others show only a narrow edge. This creates a changing pattern of circles, lines, and open sky. The photograph shows the sculpture outdoors, with trees, bushes, flower boxes, and paths around it. A blue sky makes the pale discs easy to see. The work stands among everyday city features, so people can view it as part of the landscape. The word “kinetic” is related to movement. The name may therefore make visitors think about motion, even when the sculpture is still. Its height and repeated forms give it a clear presence in Cologne.
