The 1971 Jukebox: Music in a Bright Box

A jukebox is a machine that plays music singles. The photograph shows a Wurlitzer 3500 called “Zodiac,” made in 1971. That date makes this jukebox interesting: it is more than fifty years old, but its bold design still looks lively. The machine has a large dark speaker at the top. Below it, many small buttons form a long line. A wide glass panel covers a bright display area. The lower part has colorful blue, white, and gold lines. In the middle, a round gold detail sits above a blue vertical panel. The word “Zodiac” appears on the front. A jukebox is both a music player and a piece of furniture. Its large body gives it a strong presence in a room. This example shows how technology can also have a distinctive visual style. Today, people often play music on small digital devices. The jukebox offers a very different experience: one large machine, one selected single, and a visible place for music.
