Welwitschia mirabilis: A Remarkable Gymnosperm

Welwitschia mirabilis is a species in the gymnosperm family Welwitschiaceae. It is not an animal, although one supplied data label places it in an animal category. The reliable description identifies it as a gymnosperm, a group of seed-producing plants. The photograph shows this unusual plant on sandy ground. Its long, broad green leaves spread out from a central area. In the middle, several reddish-brown structures rise above the leaves. A person kneels nearby and photographs it. This shows the plant’s low shape and large spread. The scientific name is Welwitschia mirabilis. The available facts do not explain the meaning of “mirabilis,” so we should not guess about its name or history. They also do not give information about its age, habitat, growth, or uses. Still, the image and description clearly show a distinctive plant. Its unusual form makes it an interesting example of a gymnosperm.
