September 26: Remembering the 43 Students

On September 26, 2014, forty-three students disappeared in Iguala, Mexico. They were students at the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College. The students had traveled from their college when local police reportedly stopped them. The case later showed possible links between police, organized crime, and other authorities. It became one of Mexico’s most important human rights cases. The students have not been found alive. By 2025, only three students’ remains had been identified, according to officials. Families and supporters continue to ask for truth and justice. The photograph shows a public march. A person holds a Mexican flag, three small skulls, and a large number 43. Behind this person, people carry signs and umbrellas. One sign says, “Ayotzinapa somos todos,” meaning “We are all Ayotzinapa.” The number 43 has become a strong symbol of memory and protest. September 26 is a date to remember the students and the continuing search for answers.
