Lotus: Small Yellow Flowers in Green Grass
Lotus is not the name of only one flower. It is a genus, or a group of related flowering plants, in the bean family, Fabaceae. The photograph shows one Lotus pedunculatus plant. Its stems are thin, green, and upright. Small green leaves grow along them. Near the top of one long stem, a round cluster of yellow flowers stands out. More yellow flower clusters appear behind it, but they are soft and out of focus. This plant is interesting because its flowers are easy to notice even though each flower is small. Together, they make bright yellow groups among the green grass. The main flower cluster is almost at the center-right of the picture. Can you see the darker lines inside some yellow flowers? Can you find the leaves lower on the stems? The background is mostly green, with light yellow areas. It gives the plant a quiet, natural setting. Look closely: how many flower clusters can you count?Sources & licenses
