Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey: Stone Buildings on a Green Hill
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is an abbey in France. Its recorded inception date is 709, so it has a very old recorded beginning, although the picture shows only its outside. In the image, the abbey covers a steep, rocky hill. Many stone walls and buildings rise from the green lower part toward the top. This creates a clear upward shape. Near the highest point, there is a tall square tower. A dark roof and a very thin spire finish it. Smaller pointed roofs stand nearby. The walls look brown, gray, and golden in the daylight. They have many small windows and strong vertical lines. Trees grow around the lower walls. Behind the abbey, the sky is blue-gray with large white and gray clouds. Look carefully. Which part is highest: the tower or the lower buildings? Can you find the small pointed roofs on the right? What colors can you see in the stone? The picture helps us notice how the abbey and the hill form one tall scene.Sources & licenses
