Dionaea muscipula: A Plant with Open Traps
Dionaea muscipula is a carnivorous plant. In the photograph, several small traps sit close to the ground. They look a little like open mouths. Each trap has two curved sides, and many fine, pale lines form a fringe around the edges. Some traps are light green, while their centers have soft pink or red colors. This unusual shape makes the plant easy to recognize. The plant grows among long, thin green leaves. Moss and other small plants cover the ground around it. The traps are the most striking part of the picture, because they are wider and brighter than the leaves. They also give the plant a very different appearance from an ordinary leafy plant. Dionaea muscipula is a useful name to remember for this subject. It identifies the plant shown here, while “carnivorous plant” describes its type. The image does not show an animal inside a trap, but it clearly shows the plant’s special trap-shaped structures in their natural-looking surroundings.Sources & licenses
