Der Jacquard-Webstuhl: Eine Maschine mit Lochkarten

The Jacquard Loom: A Machine That Read Cards

In 1801, a special loom began using punched cards to control weaving. It was called the Jacquard loom. This is what makes it unusual: instead of a person controlling every part by hand, the loom followed instructions from cards with holes. These cards controlled the machine as it made cloth. The cards were simple, but the idea was remarkable for its time. In the image, the loom is a very large machine with many thin threads. A wide piece of light-colored cloth hangs in the middle, and more cloth is rolled at the front. There are also many metal parts and wheels. The loom looks complex, but its basic idea is clear: punched cards guide the weaving process. The Jacquard loom connects an old craft with an early form of machine control. It shows how a simple set of instructions can guide a large machine and help create woven cloth.
